Since its founding, In My Shoes’ works to ensure that young people experiencing out-of-home care will be supported through their transitional years to develop the competencies to realize their potential as adults. The program was created by alumni of foster care and their closest allies in the child welfare system, with the goal that mentees would be matched with a mentor who had been in the foster care system and therefore “in my shoes.”
More recently, the In My Shoes model in partnership with Arizona’s Children Association has evolved to include mentors from all areas of the community in order to provide more mentors for the youth in our program. This new expanded version of In My Shoes, has been rebranded as the Arizona’s Children Association THRIVE mentor program. This expanded program allows us to better accomplish the philosophy of In My Shoes by providing mentors for all of our youth aging out of foster care who would like to be mentored.
